Association for the Promotion of the Status of Women (APSW)
In 1974, a group of concerned women and men formed The Status of Women Promotion
Group. Its objectives were to promote women's rights and eliminate discrimination
against women in Thailand. Maechee
Khunying Kanitha Wichiencharoen is a founder and was the APSW
president for many years. Dr Pensri Pichaisanit is the current President of APSW.
~ In 1981 Emergency Home I was established with the cooperation of The Women's Lawyers Association of Thailand and The Girl Guides Association of Thailand.
~ In 1982 APSW was registered as a legal charity.
~ In 1986 Emergency Home II and The Children's Home were opened in their current location, Don Muang, Bangkok.
~ In 1989 The Jimmy-Rosalynn Carter Women's Clinic and Nursery and The Sasakawa Women's Education and Training Center were opened in their current location, Don Muang, Bangkok.
~ In 1990 the Gender and Development Research Institute was established at the WE-TRAIN center complex.
~ In 1995 the Don Muang Youth Center was founded in Don Muang and the Women's Health Clinic was established in Dusit, Bangkok.
~ In 2002 , WE-TRAIN International House was established to operate as an on-site conference center.
~ In 2003 , The center provided sensitive care and assistance to rape victims.
APSW currently has five main projects which are:
1) Emergency Homes for Distressed Women and Children
2) The Jimmy-Rosalynn Carter Women's Clinic and Nursery
3) Sasakawa Women's Education and Training Center (WE-TRAIN)
4) Gender and Development Research Institute (GDRI)
5) WE-TRAIN International House (WE-TRAIN)
